UT student presents research
UT preservation student Casey Gallagher presents her research.

A graduate historic preservation studio at The University of Texas at Austin selected Humanities Texas’s Byrne-Reed House as a major semester project this fall. Led by professors Michael Holleran and Wayne Bell, students Casey Gallagher, Tenaya Hills, Shonda Mace, Namrata Venkatraman, and Robyn Williams Heeks conducted historical and architectural research about the Byrne-Reed House and the surrounding neighborhood. Michael L. Gillette
Michael Gillette Continuity emerged as the theme of a remarkable forum of former board members held on October 13. During their combined three decades of service on the humanities council, panelists Wright Lassiter, Sam Moore, Betty Sue Flowers, Robert Patten, and longtime executive director Jim Veninga pursued a vision that still guides Humanities Texas’s course today. We balance large statewide endeavors with small community projects; council-directed programs with regrants for local initiatives. While the number of worthwhile ideas and opportunities still exceeds our limited financial resources, making the humanities accessible to all Texans remains our objective. Read more. . .

Humanities Texas board members Juliet V. García, William Livingston, and Adair Margo have recently made local and, in Margo’s case, international news.

El Paso native Margo received the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico’s highest award for non-citizens. Arturo Sarukhan, Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, presented the award during a ceremony at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. Read more. . .

Livingston, who retired in August after 58 years of service at The University of Texas at Austin, was featured in a front-page story in the Austin American-Statesman on November 19 and a feature article in UT's Alcalde magazine.

García, president of the University of Texas at Brownsville, was named one of six distinguished alumni of The University of Texas at Austin for 2007. A native of Brownsville, she earned a doctoral degree from UT’s College of Communication and was the first Hispanic woman to lead a college or university in the United States. Read more. . .

Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, conducts and supports public programs in history, literature, philosophy, and other humanities disciplines. These programs strengthen Texas communities and ultimately help sustain representative democracy by cultivating informed, educated citizens.
